SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team will get the 2015 season going this weekend, starting tomorrow at 4 p.m. with its season opener away at Massachusetts before another away contest on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Providence.
Head coach Phil Wheddon is excited about the 2015 campaign after coming off an excellent spring season. The Orange finished 2014 with an overall record of 5-10-4, competing in the toughest conference in the NCAA, the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"We are coming off a very good spring, not only because of our results but because of the unbelievable commitment that the players showed to each other and what we are trying to achieve," Wheddon said. "I'm very proud of our team and the way they are working to achieve great things."
The Orange return 17 players from last season, which include starting goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan and leading scorer Stephanie Skilton. Brosnan earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team after totaling 68 saves and three shutouts. Skilton led the team with eight goals and 18 points.
The first test for the Orange will be Massachusetts, which is a team that Syracuse has not faced off against since 2003. UMass posted a 5-9-5 record last season, but the Minutewomen return 9-of-11 starters including its entire defensive back.

After the game against UMass on Friday, the Orange will make their way up to Providence to take on the Friars on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Friars bring back 21 players from a year ago, including four of their top five scorers from the 2014 season.
Providence finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 9-8-2. The last time the Orange and Friars faced off was back in September of 2012 when Providence defeated Syracuse by a final score of 2-1. Despite the loss, Syracuse owns the all-time series with an overall record of 11-5-1 against the Friars.
