PROVIDENCE, R.I.- After coming off a 6-0 win against Massachusetts on Friday, the Syracuse women's soccer team was held scoreless at Providence on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Friars by a final score of 1-0 in non-conference play.
Â
Despite Syracuse (1-1-0) outshooting Providence (2-0-0) by a total of 15-6, the Orange were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The Friars lone goal came from Catherine Zimmerman in the 58th minute, as she chipped a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan.
"Providence was a very physical team and we knew they would give us a good test," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We have to give them credit for the way they played defensively. Any time you outshoot a team like that, you expect to come out on top, but our end product was not as good as it was on Friday."
Â
Brosnan made two saves on three shots on goal from the Friars. As for Providence, Kristyn Shea came away with the shutout, making four saves in net to keep the Orange scoreless.
Â
The Orange had numerous chances to score, but could not finish. Sophomore Jessica Vigna led the charge with four total shots, which was followed by classmate Sheridan Street and senior Jackie Firenze who tallied three shots each. Street also had a goal that ended up getting called back because she was offsides.Â
Â
Syracuse will take on St John's this Friday in its home opener at SU Soccer Stadium. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
"We know that St. John's is a very good team and we will take the week to learn from our lessons today," Wheddon said. "We are excited to play at home in front of our Syracuse family and friends and hope to see people out at the game."Â
