SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Syracuse will host #18 St. John's on Friday night for its home opener in the second contest of the New York Challenge Cup, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse (1-1-0) welcomes St. John's (2-0-0), Colgate (0-2-0) and Albany (1-1-0) to the SU Soccer Stadium this weekend for the New York Challenge Cup, beginning on Friday with the first game at 4 p.m. Colgate and Albany will face off in the first game, which will be followed by the Orange and Red Storm.
Syracuse and St. John's will renew its BIG EAST rivalry by playing each other for the first time since 2012, when the Orange took down the Red Storm by a final score of 3-0. The Orange control a 9-6-2 overall record against the Red Storm, dating back to Syracuse's inaugural season in 1994.
"We are excited to play at home in front of our Syracuse family and friends and we hope to see a lot people out at our games on Friday and Sunday," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We know we will be playing two good oppositions, including St. John's who is ranked 18th in the country right now, which will be a good test for us."
The Red Storm opened up their season with two 1-0 wins, coming against Stony Brook and Towson. In both wins, senior Rachel Daly played a pivotal role, scoring the lone goal against Stony Brook while assisting on the only goal against Towson. Daly's strong play led to her being named BIG EAST Player of the Week and is a player the Orange will want to keep a close eye on.
The New York Challenge Cup is starting to become a formal tournament, inviting some of the top teams in the state of New York.
"We think that pulling teams from different leagues and different environments just adds to the competitive element of our schedules," Wheddon said. "We hope that the New York Challenge Cup is something that we can continue because it brings top teams together in the state of New York to compete for the trophy."
The Orange will take on Albany on Sunday at 3 p.m., which is followed by the 11:30 a.m. contest between St. John's and Colgate.
The Great Danes defeated Davidson in their season opener by a final score of 2-1 before losing to Campbell 4-3 in double overtime.
This weekend's New York Challenge Cup is free admission. The following schedule is as follows:
Friday, Aug. 28
Colgate vs. Albany at 4:00 p.m.
