Second Orange to be named ECAC Rookie of the Week in 2015
DANBURY, Conn. – For the second straight week, a member of the Syracuse University football team has been named the ECAC Rookie of the Week. Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey took home the award after his performance against Wake Forest on Sept. 12.
It marks Dungey's second honor for his effort against the Demon Deacons. The Lake Oswego, Ore. product was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week earlier in the week.
Dungey follows freshman running back Jordan Fredericks as the ECAC Rookie of the Week after Fredericks ran for 103 yards and a score against Rhode Island in the season opener.
Â
Dungey became the sixth Orange true freshman to start a game at quarterback since freshmen became eligible in 1972. He completed 8-of-13 pass attempts for 221 yards, including 186 yards in the final 30 minutes of play.
Â
The rookie signal caller connected with junior wide receiver Brisly Estime for an 89-yard touchdown near the end of the third quarter, marking the third-longest pass play in team history. He then sealed the victory with a 53-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Steve Ishmael early in the fourth frame.
Â
With four touchdown passes in two games, Dungey has already matched the Syracuse single-season record for most touchdown passes by a true freshman.
Â
Temple's Jahad Thomas and Tyler Matakevich were named the ECAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Janarion Grant of Rutgers earned ECAC Special Teams Player of the Week recognition.
Syracuse continues its four-game Carrier Dome homestand against Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set 12:30 p.m. The game will be presented by National Grid and air live on RSN. Saturday is also "Take-a-Kid-to-the-Game Day." All children 12-and-under will be admitted free with the purchase of an adult ticket.
Tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
