Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame will honor former 'Cuse stars
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Former Syracuse University football stars Jim Brown and Morlon Greenwood will be among the first to be inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame. The inaugural class will be enshrined on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y.

The 2015 class is composed of 28 inductees, including nine administrators, nine coaches, six athletes, two contributors, and two officials.

A College and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Brown excelled scholastically in several sports, playing baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, and competing in track and field at Manhasset High School. As a senior in 1952-53, Brown averaged 38.0 points per game on the basketball court, which is still a Nassau County record. He also earned all-county accolades in football, lacrosse and was the county champion in the high jump.

At Syracuse, Brown was a member of the basketball, football, lacrosse, and track and field programs. He made his biggest impact on the gridiron, earning unanimous first-team All-America honors in 1956. That season, he matched the NCAA scoring record with 43 points against Colgate and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

Following his collegiate career, Brown played nine years in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. From 1957-1965, Brown ran for 12,312 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns. Upon his retirement, he held the NFL records for career rushing yards, career rushing touchdowns, career total touchdowns (126), and career all-purpose yards (15,549).

Brown has been honored by numerous organizations for his numerous athletic accomplishments. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. A two-time All-American on the lacrosse field, Brown was enshrined in the Naitonal Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1995, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Greenwood attended Freeport High School, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. Despite not playing football until his junior year, he earned all-county, All-Long Island, and all-state accolades as a senior. On the wrestling mat, he was a three-time county champion and the state champion at 215 pounds.

At Syracuse, Greenwood was an All-BIG EAST First Team honoree in 2000. He tallied 308 total tackles in his Orange career and Syracuse played in three bowl games during his time on campus, including the 1997 Fiesta Bowl and 1999 Orange Bowl.

Greenwood his football career at the professional level, playing eight seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans. From 2004-07, Greenwood averaged 120.0 tackles per season. He notched a career-best 144 stops with Houston in 2005.

Brown and Greenwood will join 26 others in the first Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame class. Jean Bartholomew, Carol Braun, Joan Case, Diane Chapman, Marie Corrado, Jay Fiedler, Tom Flatley, Rosalia Gioia, Lorraine Hoffman, Rebecca King, Ethel Kloberg, Buddy Krumenacker, Dr. Mira Martinich, Marcus Martone, Jason Morgan, Bernie O'Brien, Ted Peterseon, Don Ryan, Judith Salerno, Fred Smith, Nathalie Smith, Don Snyder, Wally Szcserbiak, Dr. James Tolle, Howard Vogts, and Jack White will also be inducted.

Syracuse wraps up a four-game Carrier Dome homestand against No. 8 LSU on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. The game will be presented by Tops Friendly Markets and air live on ESPN.Â
