Eight current and former Syracuse student-athletes medaled at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships, which concluded on Sunday in the Carrier Dome, with Canada taking the gold over the Iroquois Nationals and the United States defeating Israel to earn the bronze.
Current Orange goaltender Warren Hill, as well as former Orange standouts Brett Bucktooth (2003-06), Sid Smith (2008-09), Randy Staats (2014-15) and Jeremy Thompson (2010-11) were part of the runner-up Iroquois squad.
Staats tallied 10 goals and 22 assists in the tournament, which was the second-most points by any member of the Iroquois team, and ranked 17th among players in the tournament.
Thompson was the go-to player at the faceoff X for the Iroquois, winning 63-percent of his attempts, which ranked seventh overall.
Smith and Bucktooth, who were close defenders at Syracuse, each recorded points as well. Smith tallied a pair of assists, while Bucktooth scored a goal in the tournament.
The United States squad was led by the 39-year old Casey Powell, who despite graduating in 1998 still showed his productivity on the international stage. The MLL's career-points leader recorded eight goals and 23 assists for the U.S.
Teammate and fellow 'Cuse alum Joel White (2007-11) scored four times and recorded five assists for the Americans.
Brian Megill (2009-13), another defensive specialist, recorded two assists for the U.S. as well on their way to winning bronze.
However, despite the eight medalists, the top-scoring Syracuse alum in the tournament wasn't on either team. Stephen Keogh (2008-11) was the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships' seventh-leading scorer. He posted 19 goals and 21 assists while leading Ireland to a sixth-place finish.
