SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Backed by another stellar performance from senior netminder Jenn Gilligan in between the pipes, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team blanked RIT in College Hockey America play on Saturday night, beating the Tigers by a final score of 3-0.
It was the fourth time this season that Gilligan kept her competition scoreless for Syracuse (11-12-3, 7-3-2 CHA). Behind Gilligan's performance in net, the Orange scored three goals to split the CHA weekend series with RIT (6-19-1, 2-9-1 CHA).
Sophomore Dakota Derrer opened up the scoring in the first period with a blast near the blue line to beat RIT goaltender Jetta Rackleff just 1:39 into the contest. Derrer's goal gave the Orange a 1-0 lead headed into the second frame, as Syracuse was not done there.
Junior Heather Schwarz made it 2-0 at the 7:13 mark in the second frame, beating Rackleff in front of the crease. After the goal from Schwarz, sophomore Alysha Burriss  delivered on an Orange power play with just over five minutes remaining in the period, making it 3-0 Syracuse. The three-goal lead for the Orange would eventually be enough as Syracuse skated to the victory.
The Orange outshot the Tigers 38-14 in the contest. Despite 35 saves from Rackleff, Syracuse was able to put three past her for the win.
Syracuse will get back on the road next weekend for a pivotal CHA series against first place Mercyhurst. The Lakers are currently two points ahead of the Orange in the conference standings.
