Duo recognized for powering 'Cuse past No. 17 Virginia Tech Saturday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey and junior linebacker Zaire Franklin were named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Back and Linebacker of the Week, respectively, on Monday, Oct. 17 for their performances in Syracuse's 31-17 victory against No. 17 Virginia Tech.
Â
Dungey, a finance major in Syracuse's Martin J. Whitman School of Management, finished with a career-high 417 yards of total offense and became the first player in school history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game. He was 28-of-53 passing for 311 yards and a touchdown. He rushed 24 times for a career-best 106 yards and another score. His 1-yard touchdown plunge with 7:56 remaining proved the difference in the Orange's first win over a ranked opponent since 2012.
Â
Syracuse's defensive game captain, Franklin recorded his third double-digit tackle game in the last four outings with 10 stops, including one for a loss, against the Hokies. During one second-quarter drive, Franklin stuffed Virginia Tech quarterback Jerod Evans for no gain on third-and-1 at the Syracuse 38. Then, on fourth down, Franklin threw Evans for a loss of two yards to end the drive. Franklin is averaging 10.8 tackles per game over the last four weeks and leads the Orange with 7.5 tackles for loss this season.
Â
This is the second time this season Franklin, who is a dual major in finance and marketing management in the Whitman School, has been named the ACC Linebacker of the Week. He also received the recognition on Sept. 26 following the Orange's win at Connecticut.
Â
Syracuse is back in action Saturday, Oct. 22 when it travels to Boston College for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff against the Eagles at Alumni Stadium.
