SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (8-7-3, 1-6-2) battled with No. 18 North Carolina (10-3-3, 5-2-2) in Sunday's contest at SU Soccer Stadium, but fell short, 3-1.
The Tar Heels took a 2-nil lead in the first half, but Stephanie Skilton put the Orange on the board 45 seconds before halftime to keep Syracuse in the game. Alana O'Neill placed a ball perfectly inside the box to a streaking Skilton, who struck before the North Carolina goalkeeper could recover. The Orange outshot North Carolina in the first half, 7-4.
In the second half, North Carolina found an insurance goal in the 54th minute when a deflected shot fell right to the foot of Bridgette Andrzejewski for her second goal of the day.
Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan finished the day with two saves. The backline defense of Jessica Vigna and Taylor Bennett made several successful clears in the game on Tar Heel quick counter-attacks.
Skilton's goal was her sixth of the season and the 27th of her career, placing her in a tie for second place in Syracuse's all-time leading goal scoring list. She is tied with Candy Reich who played for the Orange from 1996-99.
The Syracuse graduating class was honored before the game during a Senior Day ceremony. Annette Cappellino, Maddie Iozzi, Rebecca Pongetti, Sierra Shafer and Skilton were all given tribute for their contributions during their time with the Orange.
The Orange will close out the regular season on the road at Boston College on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
