Syracuse Tops Monmouth, 71-50

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Graduate guard Andrew White III scored all of his game-high 18 points in the first half and Syracuse (3-0) remained unbeaten by defeating Monmouth (1-2), 71-50, in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational at the Carrier Dome.

White hit 6-of-10 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the first 20 minutes of play to help the Orange build a 37-29 advantage by the break. The game was knotted at 20 when White connected on consecutive 3-pointers to put Syracuse up for good. White tallied 12 of the last 17 SU points of the half.

Syracuse opened the second half with six straight points to extend its lead to 43-29. The Orange margin grew to as many as 25 points before the outing was settled.

In addition to White's work, freshman forward Taurean Thompson hit 5-of-6 shots and finished with 12 points. Freshman guard Tyus Battle drained three 3-pointers and had nine points, sophomore guard Frank Howard had eight points and six assists and graduate center DaJuan Coleman contributed seven points and a game-high eight boards. Sophomore forward Tyler Lydon ended up with six points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Syracuse defense limited Monmouth to 20-of-64 (.313) from the field, including a 4-of-29 (.138) effort from the 3-point line. For the third straight contest, the Orange held the opposition under 60 points.
The Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational continues on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the Orange hosts South Carolina State in the Carrier Dome at 7 p.m.Â
