Gorelina tallies double-double in Orange win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth set proved the difference in the win over Virginia tonight, as the Orange volleyball team defeated the Cavaliers in four sets (26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) on Friday night at Memorial Gym in Charlottesville.

Syracuse advanced to 6-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 7-17 overall, while Virginia fell to 2-11 in the ACC and 5-20 overall on the season.

"I was really happy with the win," head coach Leonid Yelin said of tonight's game. "In this conference, you can play the teams at the top and you can play the teams at the bottom, and no matter what they're going to fight.

"I don't think the record really reflects the potential of the teams," Yelin said.

Sophomore Anastasiya Gorelina was the only 'Cuse player to tally double-digit kills in the four-set battle, as the outside hitter had 16 for a new career-high mark.

Gorelina completed the double-double with 11 digs, while adding four blocks, two assists and a service ace to her impressive game resume.

Four Orange players in sophomores Jalissa Trotter and Santita Ebangwese along with freshmen Mackenzie Weaver and Kendra Lukacs came away with seven kills apiece to add to the Syracuse offense.

Trotter led the Orange in assists on the night with 28, while Weaver added five assists, 12 digs, two service aces and a block.

Junior Leah Levert spearheaded the Orange effort at the net, as the middle blocker tallied six assisted stops and a solo block on the night.

Reaching the 20-count mark for the sixth time this season was junior Belle Sand, who led the team with 20 digs.

As a whole, the Orange outblocked the Cavaliers 12.0-6.0, while averaging .227 in hitting percentage compared to UVA's .170 on the night.

The Orange reached match point two times in the first set, as Virginia kept it close all the way to the wire.

A kill from Ebangwese brought the score to 23-21 'Cuse, forcing the Cavalier timeout.

The pair sided out to reach match point for Syracuse, until an Orange attack error and a kill from UVA tied the game at 24.

Syracuse was able to tally a quick 2-0 run to win the first set in extra points, 26-24.

Weaver got the momentum going for the Orange in the second set with back-to-back service aces, bringing Syracuse ahead, 5-1.

The Orange led by as many as six points in the middle of the second set, forcing UVA to call a timeout.

Virginia fought its way back to a tie game at 20 points apiece, but the Orange were able to outlast the Cavaliers to win set two, 25-23.

Syracuse trailed in set three more than in the remainder of the game, but was able to fight back late in the set to tie the score at 20 to force the Virginia timeout.

The pair sided out back and forth, until a 4-1 Virginia run closed out the set with the Cavaliers on top, 25-23.

'Cuse forced a pair of Virginia timeouts in the fourth set after taking a four- and eight-point lead, respectively.

After the break, the Orange held on for an 8-7 run to close out set four on top, 25-16, and win the match, 3-1.

Syracuse returns home next Friday, Nov. 11 to host Miami in the Women's Building. The Orange will then play Florida State at home next Sunday.
