SYRACUSE, N.Y. – As 2016 draws to a close, Cuse.com is counting down the best 10 plays from this year's Orange football season. One play will be featured each day with the top play revealed on New Year's Eve.
Play No. 7 on our countdown is freshman Moe Neal's 49-yard touchdown run against Colgate on Sept. 2, which came on the first time he touched the ball as a college player.
THE SETUP: The Orange led the Raiders 10-7 early in the second quarter of the season opener when head coach Dino Babers inserted Neal into the lineup for the first time.
THE PLAY: On first-and-10 from the Colgate 49, quarterback Eric Dungey turned and handed the ball to Neal. The rookie started up the middle before darting left, then breaking back right as he reached the second level of the Raider defense. Neal sprinted by two diving Colgate defenders and shook off a would-be tackle by Chris Morgan at the 25-yard line before dashing into the end zone.
THE AFTERMATH: Neal tallied 68 yards on nine carries to lead all Syracuse rushers in the game, and his 49-yard scoring run matched the longest rush for the Orange in 2016. The Gastonia, N.C. native finished his rookie campaign second on the team in rushing (357 yards) and led the Orange in yards per carry at 5.3.
