Three 'Cuse Student-Athletes Earn ACC Postgraduate Scholarships

GREENSBORO, N.C.- A trio of outstanding Syracuse student-athletes will represent the Orange as 2016 Weaver-James-Corrigan Award recipients. Seniors Jackie Firenze (women's soccer), Margo Malone (cross country) and Kari Tomeny (rowing) earned the honor for their pursuit of excellence in the classroom and in their sport. They will join 40 other student-athletes from Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club. The luncheon will be presented by ESPN on April 13 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro.

The postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following the completion of their undergraduate requirements. Firenze, Malone and Tomeny will receive $5,000 each toward their graduate education. The ACC selects the winners based on performance with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.

Jackie Firenze; Health and Physical Education; Soccer; Baldwinsville, N.Y.
Firenze, a native of Baldwinsville, N.Y., was a four-year starter for the Syracuse women's soccer team. As a two-time team captain, Firenze started in 71 of the 73 games played with the Orange. She finished her career with eight goals, seven assists, 23 points and two game-winning goals, leading the team both on and off the pitch. Firenze has served as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) since enrolling at Syracuse in 2012 while volunteering with the "You Can Play" Program, the Special Olympics and 'Cuse Cares. She has also been a member of "Kicks 4 Kidz," which is the Syracuse Soccer Academy's program that gives young children the opportunity to play soccer and develop their skills.

Margo Malone; Biology; Cross Country; Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills
Malone was a 2015 USTFCCCA First Team All-American in the 10,000-meters after finishing seventh in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in the second-straight year she was a national qualifier. The Pittsburgh native also won the 2015 ACC Outdoor 10,000-meter Championship and set the school record in the event earlier in the season with a time of 32:29.89 at the 2015 Stanford Invitational. Malone also has been the Orange's top cross country finisher in each event she's run for over two-straight seasons, medaling in both her junior (3rd) and senior (3rd) seasons and earning All-ACC honors as a sophomore as well with a ninth place finish at the ACC Championships. Malone is a three-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Northeast Region team (2013, 2014, 2015). Malone is a biology major and in addition to her running success has interned in biology labs and has continued to be named to All-ACC Academic teams for track and field and cross country.

Kari Tomeny; Economics, Psychology; Rowing; Baldwinsville, N.Y.
Tomeny, 2015 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete, was selected to the 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team honoree. She was one of eight team members to earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall of 2015. Tomeny rowed in the first varsity eight boat in every race during the 2015 campaign. As a junior, Tomeny helped the Orange to a third-place showing in the first varsity eight competition at the 2015 ACC Championships. Before coming to Syracuse, Tomeny earned All-Atlantic 10 First Team and All-New England First Team honors at Rhode Island in 2012.
