Syracuse hosts Albany this Sunday in a top 12 match-up. The two teams have played every year since 2004. As a part of the Centennial Season, Cuse.com is looking back at memorable matchups with each of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team's opponents this season. Today, we flashback to February 16, 2014, when the Orange took down the Great Danes in overtime to take the head-to-head series lead 11-1.
Syracuse, N.Y. – Henry Schoonmaker's first career game-winning goal came at the perfect time against the Great Danes as the Orange topped Albany in overtime, 17-16. For the Orange, this 2014 victory marked payback for the double-overtime loss to the Great Danes the year prior.
Syracuse started the game with an explosive attack and jumped to a 4-0 lead, behind consecutive goals from senior captain, Billy Ward. Derrick Eccles of Albany kick-started the Great Danes attack with an unassisted goal at the six-minute mark but come the end of the first quarter Syracuse would have the lead 7-3.
The second quarter was highlighted by a 6-1 Great Danes rally off of eventual Tewaaraton Award recipient Lyle Thompson's three assists. With three seconds remaining in the quarter Randy Staats would use his speed to tie the game at 9.
After the Orange and Great Danes exchanged goals in the opening of the third quarter, Syracuse went on to score five unanswered goals to take the lead 16-11. Behind the efforts of brothers Lyle, Miles, and cousin Ty Thompson, Albany would go on a five goal run of their own and then tie the game at 16 off of John Maloney's goal with 2:06 remaining.
The opening faceoff after Maloney's goal lead to a Great Danes man advantage and shot by Lyle Thompson. Orange goalie, Bobby Wardwell was there to answer the call and Tom Grimm successfully cleared the ball. Head coach, John Desko called a time out and Hakeem Lecky held the ball to finish out regulation play.
Randy Staats joined the Orange attack five seconds into OT after being released from Matt Harris' penalty incurred during the fourth quarter. Staats received a pass, avoided an Albany pole and passed the ball off to Schoonmaker who spun and whipped a bounce shot past Blaze Riorden to end the game.
Schoonmaker finished the game with a pair of goals and Staats would lead the Orange with five goals and two assists. Dylan Donahue and Billy Ward also contributed with five and three points, respectively. Dominic Lamolinara made eight saves in net to start the game and Wardwell made eight saves of his own, seven in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
