CHICAGO -- A spot in the Final Four is on the line when Syracuse takes on Virginia in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Elite Eight at the United Center on Sunday, March 27 at 6:09 EST. The Cavaliers are the top seed in the Midwest Region, while the Orange are the No. 10 seed.
The game will be televised on TBS. Fans can also listen to the broadcast on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship station TK99 FM in Syracuse.
ORANGE STUNS GONZAGA IN SWEET 16
Syracuse (22-13) rallied from a nine-point deficit late in the second half to defeat Gonzaga, 63-60, in the regional semifinal on Friday night. The Orange did not allow a Zags' field goal in the final 6:30 and outscored Gonzaga, 15-3, over that span. Syracuse took a 61-60 lead with 22 seconds on the clock, and Tyler Lydon's block in the closing seconds helped secure the victory. Lydon hit a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining for the 63-60 final.
SYRACUSE-VIRGINIA ROUND TWO
Sunday's game will be the second match up between the Orange and Cavaliers this season. The first game took place on January 24 in Charlottesville. Syracuse trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, but fought back and made it a one-possession game with 29 seconds remaining. But the Cavaliers went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 26 seconds to record a 73-65 victory. Graduate student Michael Gbinije led the Orange with 24 points, while freshman Malachi Richardson scored a season-high 23 points.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia enters Sunday's game with a 29-7 record. The Cavaliers defeated Iowa State, 84-71, in the Sweet 16 on Friday to advance to the regional final. ACC Player of the Year and first-team All-American Malcolm Brogdon leads the Cavaliers. He averages 18.4 points per game. Anthony Gill adds 13.9 points per contest and leads the team on the boards, pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game.
