
Orange To Head to Four Track Events This Weekend

After a week off, the Syracuse track and field teams will split up to attend a total of four events this weekend: The Auburn War Eagle, the Virginia Challenge, the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton and the Upstate Challenge at Cornell.
LAST TIME OUT:
At the Sam Howell Invitational-
Two weeks ago, the distance runners for the Orange made their way to Princeton for the Sam Howell Invitational. Juris Silenieks highlighted the men's performances, finishing fifth in the 5000-meter event with a time of 14:28.55. For the women's runners, Mary Malone's fourth place finish in the 5000-meter run (16:56.97) while Rebecca Skodis finished eighth place (17:14.75) to highlight the women's success.
At the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational-Â Â
At the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational, Freddie Crittenden's first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, highlighted the weekend's performances, earning him ACC Performer of the Week honors, while posting the second-fastest time nationally in his event.
The team also turned in a good showing in the 4x100 relay with both relay teams finishing in the top-10. The 'A' grouping —Freddie Crittenden III, Kashif Miller, Zack Warden and Winston Lee—took first, followed by the 'B' grouping—David Gilstrap, Randall Johnson, Powel Deslandes and Pascal Bastien—which finished eighth.
For the women's competitors, Rebecca Robinson had a successful weekend placing 10th in the 200-meter dash (24.22) as well as third in the 400-meter (54.46). In the 100-meter hurdles, Tia Thevenin placed eighth with a time of 13.75.
RETURNING TO FAMILIAR MEETS:
Last Year at the Auburn War Eagle-Â
The sprinter and jumpers were at Auburn last season as well, with numerous top-ten finishes. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Freddie Crittenden III placed third with a time of 13.85 ahead of former Orange standout and fellow All-American Donald Pollit (sixth/ 13.85) and David Gilstrap (10th/ 14.69). For the jumpers, Regine Hunter finished eighth in the triple jump (12.28 meters) and Jabari Butler placed seventh in the high jump.
Last Year at the Virginia Challenge-
Justyn Knight highlighted the success of the Orange runners last year at the Virginia Challenge as he set a new Syracuse record in the 1500-meter event. With the meet serving as his track debut, Knight beat the former record set in 1972 with his time of 3:39.66. Â
Last Year at the Larry Ellis Invitational-Â
Three women runners, Shaylyn Tuite, Rebecca Skodis and Sydney Lehir all competed at last year's Larry Ellis Invitational. In the 5k event, Tuite placed 10th with a time of 16:54.73 followed by Skodis (13th/ 16:57.25). Lehir competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 10:33.03 for 10th place.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE:
A top-crop of distance runners will compete at the Virginia Challenge, with Knight looking to better his 1500-meter time. He'll be challenged by defending NCAA Champion in the event Henry Wynne, as well as teammates Adam Palamar and Joel Hubbard, who finished the indoor season as All-American milers. Wynne owns the top 1500 time in the nation thus far, with Craig Engels of Ole Miss in the top section of the 1500-meters.
Kevyn Hoyos, Colin Bennie and Dan Lennon will also run in the meet in the 5k.
The majority of the women's distance team will head to Princeton, with the sprinters in Auburn. A small group will also head to Cornell on Saturday.
