SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Â The Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee took home the big award at the 44 Stars of Excellence Awards Gala, earning the One University Award, which was presented by Chancellor Kent Syverud.
The award is presented to two student organizations that have demonstrated excellence through collaboration with different stakeholders within the campus community. These organizations aimed to advance the mission and vision of the university while helping cultivate a supportive campus community for all.Â
Winning the One University Award marks the first time that Syracuse SAAC has won an organization award outside of community service. This award is regarded as one of the top student-organization awards at Syracuse.Â
The Gala recognizes individual students and recognized student organizations for their outstanding work on campus and in the community during the academic year.Â
Under the watch of Coordinator of Student-Athlete Affairs Mark Trumbo, the committee has seen tremendous growth and leadership displayed by Syracuse student-athletes.
"This year, SAAC has raised the bar in their leadership, community involvement and role in elevating the experience for Syracuse student-athletes," Trumbo said. "The positive impact this group has made on the student-athlete body and our local community deserves the highest recognition given by our university."
Over the past three years, the committee has grown from eight members to 55, welcoming student-athletes from all sports at Syracuse to make an impact in the community. The students have taken ownership and now lead initiatives on their own with the backing of SAAC President Blake Johnson.Â
One of the strongest areas of Syracuse SAAC is their commitment to community outreach. The committee is adamant on engaging with the community and creating innovative ways to get student-athlete and community members involved. Along with their hospital and school visits, SAAC has done some extraordinary work outside of the classroom and playing surface.
With the many accomplishments this year from SAAC, the group has done some amazing work that sticks out among the Atlantic Coast Conference, First, SAAC kicked off a clothing drive called "One Shirt, One Body," in which Syracuse topped the charts, raising over 450 shirts. The group then hand delivered the clothes to the Resume Mission and In My Father's Kitchen to help those in need. The committee also partnered with the Project Life Movement at a men's basketball game to increase the registry for blood cancer patients. At the game, Syracuse broke the single-day record for registries in hopes of being a "Miracle Match."Â
With SAAC's motto "Train to Win, Lead to Change," the group has made a large footprint within the Syracuse community. Athletes are more involved than ever, supporting each other and campus events, and taking action to leave a legacy for the next group of Orange.
