
Knight Breaks 5k Record at Payton Jordan Invite

Justyn Knight shattered his own school record in the 5000-meters to highlight the Payton Jordan Invitational, with another near miss from Adam Palamar on a school record at the event as well.

The Orange took on a pair of meets this weekend, with a number of distance runners heading to Stanford for the Payton Jordan Invite, while others went to the Big Red Invitational at Cornell.

Knight improved seven seconds from last year's time, crossing the line in 13:27.23, which was good for 10th in a field that featured a majority of professional runners. Philo Germano also competed in the 5k, finishing in 14:06.70, which was good for 17th in his section.

Palamar crossed the line 0.02 seconds off a 13-year old school record in the 800-meters. Palamar finished in 1:50.17, just off Valerij Petrulevich's mark from 2003.

Colin Bennie turned in a solid performance in the 10k, finishing in 28:52.72, which gave him a 23rd-place finish in the top-section of the event, which also featured numerous professionals.

In the 1500-meters, Joel Hubbard raced to a win in his section, finishing in a personal best 3:43.82.

On the women's side, Margo Malone and Shaylyn Tuite finished the 5k in 14th and 15th respectively, with Malone posting a time of 16:44.35 and Tuite breaking 17 minutes with a time of 16:58.12.

Paul Lovell highlighted the day at Cornell with a time of 1:52.51 to win the 800-meters. Elizabeth Reynolds led the way in the women's 800, finishing in 2:18.89 which was good for fourth.
Natalie Zazzara (2:29.73) and Shasche Allen (2:39.66) also competed in the event.

Kevyn Hoyos won the 5k by a wide margin, crossing the line more than 16 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, finishing in 14:31.41.

The women's 1500-meter field was loaded, with Syracuse claiming five of the top-nine spots. Maura Linde led the way in second (4:39.37), with Bridget Twomey (4:43.46/3rd), Rebecca Skodis (4:48.21/6th), Chelsie Pennello (4:48.26/7th) and Mary Malone (4:49.58/9th) following closely behind.

Nick Ryan and TJ Hornberger took second and third respectively in the 1500-meters, with Ryan finishing in 3:55.51 and Hornberger crossing the line in 4:03.32.
Jabari Butler cleared 2.00 meters in the high jump, while Randall Johnson leaped 1.90 meters. Their jumps were good for sixth and seventh, respectively. Pascal Bastein turned in a good performance in the long jump, finishing at a mark of 6.85 meters.

Next, Syracuse will take on the ACC Championships from May 13-15 in Tallahassee, Florida.
