TULSA, Okla.-Â Graduate student Anna Shkudun, junior Valeria Salazar and freshman Gabriela Knutson of the Syracuse women's tennis team became the first Orange players since 1996 to compete at the NCAA Individual Championship before losing in the first round of their respective tournament.Â
No. 27 doubles duo Knutson and Salazar were defeated by No. 3 Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan of Florida in the first round of the doubles championship in two sets 6-4, 6-3. Knutson and Salazar are the first pair since Jana and Nicole Strnadova in 1996 to receive an invite to the doubles championship.
No. 61 Shkudun was also defeated in the first round after making her way into the tournament as an alternate. The graduate student had a tough pairing in the first round, going up against No. 2 overall player Danielle Collins of Virginia. Shkudun was defeated in two consecutive sets by the final scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Like the Syracuse doubles pair, Shkudun was the first singles player competing in the field since Nicole Strnadova in 1996. Strnadova withdrew in 1997 due to an injury.Â
Syracuse ends its most historic season in program history after making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a team. The Orange return all of their players next season including Shkudun who will enter her second year of eligibility in grad school.
