
Gennaro Advances to Semifinals at Olympic Trials

Gennaro and Aghai finished with the top time in Monday's heats
PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J. – Former Syracuse University men's rower Mike Gennaro '11 and partner Dariush Aghai finished in first place in the third heat of the men's pairs on Monday morning at the United States Olympic Team Trials II. With their first-place finish, the pair advance to Tuesday morning's semifinals.
The USRowing Training Center – Princeton teammates covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:33.43. The pair edged out Paul Marcy and Ryan Shelton of the California Rowing Club by less than one second to win their heat and finish with the top time of the morning heats.
Gennaro and Aghai will be back in action on Tuesday morning, beginning at 8 a.m., in the semifinals. The top-two finishers from each semifinal race will compete on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. for a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Havertown, Pa. native went to the 2012 Olympic Games in London as an alternate. It marked the 13th consecutive Olympic Games that the Syracuse University men's rowing program was represented with either an alumnus rowing, alternate, or coach.
Gennaro sat in the stroke seat of the Orange first varsity eight crew for three seasons, helping the team to a sixth-place showing at the 2010 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta.
