First Tee of Syracuse, a local non-profit organization, has named its home course the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation Golf Complex at Butternut Creek. The announcement and official sign unveiling was held June 9, and was made possible by a major gift from the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation.
Jim and Juli Boeheim are each scheduled to take ceremonial "first swings" at the newly named complex, located on Jamesville Road. First Tee of Syracuse is dedicated to using the game of golf to teach important life skills to young people.
In February 2016, First Tee Syracuse purchased Butternut Creek Golf Course. First Tee Syracuse is one of only 20 First Tee chapters, out of 180 worldwide, to own its own course and driving range.
"Our Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of children in Central New York," said Syracuse University Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim. "Juli and I both feel strongly that First Tee of Syracuse accomplishes that."
"We are honored to have our names associated with this new golf complex," added Juli Boeheim. "More importantly, we're excited about all the benefits it will provide to kids who participate in First Tee of Syracuse."
"First Tee Syracuse is extremely appreciative of Jim and Juli's tremendous generosity, along with the generosity of donors to their foundation" said Peter Webber, executive director of First Tee Syracuse. "Our mission statement is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The Boeheim Foundation's support through their major gift will help create a sustainable model for First Tee for years to come."
Paralleling the structure of the golf instruction program, The First Tee life skills curriculum is divided into four levels, starting with PLAYer (for beginners) and progressing through Par, Birdie and Eagle. The PLAYer level focuses on The First Tee Nine Core Values, course and player etiquette. The Par level focuses on the fundamental communication and self-management skills. The Birdie level deals primarily with goal-setting. The Eagle level gives participants advanced instruction and practice on mastering Par and Birdie level skills, as well as additional topics, such as conflict management, mentoring, and career planning.
"Since First Tee's inception in Syracuse the number of young people who participate in First Tee programs has skyrocketed, from 50 in 2007 to more than 550 today," according to Dan Gardner, who serves as the president of First Tee's Board of Directors. "Our organization can't begin to thank the Boeheim Foundation enough, as their support and generosity will help to provide our programs to many more young people in Central New York."Â
First Tee programs are made available to The Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, Southwest Community Center, along with public schools throughout the area.Â
