Syracuse alum Sarah Pagano took 17th in the women's 10,000-meters at Saturday's U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon to continue Syracuse's success at the event.
Pagano's race comes less than 18 hours after Martin Hehir kicked off a busy week of Olympic trials for Syracuse student-athletes and alums with a seventh place finish in the men's 10k.
Pagano, who now races professionally for the Boston Athletic Association, crossed the line in 34:14.04. Molly Huddle (31.41.62), Emily Infield (31:46.09) and Marielle Hall (31:54.77) each qualified for Rio de Janeiro by taking the top three spots in the race.
The Ringwood, N.J. native is also accepted into the 5,000-meters at the trials, an event she still holds both the indoor and outdoor records for at SU, which will take place on Thursday, with the finals to come on Sunday.
Pagano was a USTFCCCA First Team All-American in the 10,000-meters as a redshirt senior in 2014, while taking seventh at the NCAA Championships.
Additional members of the Orange will compete to qualify for Rio and it'll be full slate of SU competitors both in Eugene and at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Edmonton on July 7-8.
In addition to Pagano's 5k bid, Michael LeBlanc will kick things off in Canada on Thursday in the 100-meter dash qualifying, while four other 'Cuse competitors will get their Olympic trials underway on Friday.
For the U.S. hopefuls, Jarret Eaton, Freddie Crittenden III and Donald Pollitt II look to qualify in the 110-meter hurdles, while to the north, Justyn Knight and Adam Palamar will race in the 1500-meters. Tia Thevenin and Jillian Drouin will also be in action in Canada as qualifying begins for the 100-meter hurdles.
Katie Zaferes (triathlon/USA) and Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100-meters/Ghana) have already punched their tickets to Rio from the Syracuse track and field program, but in addition to that duo the Orange will be represented by Alyssa Manley (field hockey), Natalie Mastracci (rowing), Jim Boeheim (basketball) and Carmelo Anthony (basketball), as they've been named to Olympic rosters in their respective sports.
