NEW YORK – Redshirt senior center Jason Emerich has been named to the 2016 Rimington Trophy Watch List, released on Wednesday, July 6.
The Rimington Trophy is presented to the most outstanding center in FBS football. The award is named after two-time Nebraska consensus All-American Dave Rimington and has been awarded annually since 2000.
Â
Emerich is one of 62 centers on the watch list, including 11 from ACC schools.
Emerich moved into the starting lineup in Week 3 last season against Central Michigan and started the last 10 games. He recorded five knockdown blocks and graded out the highest of any Orange lineman in Syracuse's matchup against No. 8 LSU. He also helped Syracuse rush for 242 yards against top-ranked Clemson, the most rushing yards allowed by the Tigers in 2015. Overall, Emerich is one of the team's most experienced lineman. He has played in 26 career games with 12 starts.
The New Ringgold, Pa. native is also star off the field. Emerich is president of Syracuse University's chapter of Uplifting Athletes. In that role, he is currently organizing the group's second public "Lift for Life," which is scheduled for July 20 inside Manley Field House. Last year, the event raised $12,000 to combat Anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer former Orange punter Rob Long was diagnosed with in 2010. Emerich was also selected to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2015.
Â
Finalists for the 2016 Rimington Trophy will be announced on Dec. 5, with the winner determined by the voting results of the Walter Camp, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America teams. This year's winner will be recognized during the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017.
Â
Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.6 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $120 million for the fight against the disorder.
