SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University football team is officially six days into its fall camp. Heading into the season opener against Colgate, Cuse TV will break down the Orange position groups, beginning first with the defensive line.
Â
Syracuse's experience along the defensive front line lies inside with contributors Chris Slayton, Kayton Samuels and Steven Clark all back in the mix. Slayton registered 22 tackles en route to 2015 College Football News and CampusInsiders.com Freshman All-America Honorable Mention accolades. Samuels started all 12 games at nose tackles a year ago, while Clark notched 21 stops as a rookie.
Â
"It's been hard work with the new coaching staff and strength staff," Clark said. "I am trying to get my body right."
Â
Clark is one of the many players to see the effects of Sean Edinger's summer strength and conditioning program. Edinger is responsible for designing programs to increase the conditioning, speed, strength and agility of Syracuse's football student-athletes.
Â
"Last year, I weighed about 315 pounds, now I weigh about 285 pounds," Clark said. "I am trying to get the fat off me and build more muscle."
Â
The competition at defensive end is wide open, as no one has started a college game at the position. Redshirt freshman Jake Pickard told Cuse TV the fact no one's role is solidified is raising the level of play across the unit.
Â
"Competition is the greatest thing you can have on a football field," Pickard said. "We're setting our own depth chart. Competition is the greatest thing we can have right now."
