Orange return more than 92 percent of their rushing yardage from last season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange football team is 11 days into its fall camp. Heading into the first game of the season against Colgate, Cuse TV will break down the Orange position groups. In the latest position preview, we take a look at the running backs.
Â
The Orange return 92.6 percent of their rushing yardage from a year ago and a pair of sophomores finished atop the post-spring depth chart – Jordan Fredericks and Dontae Strickland. As freshmen in 2015, the duo combined for 688 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. In addition, they accounted for 192 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions.
Freshman Moe Neal and redshirt senior George Morris are also in the mix for carries. With Dino Babers' high-octane offense, which averaged 81.1 plays per game last year at Bowling Green, there are plenty of opportunities to go around.
Â
"There are a lot of guys competing, working hard," Fredericks said. "We are trying to make ourselves better every day we step on the field."
Â
As a rookie, Fredericks led the team with 607 rushing yards en route to 2015 College Football News and CampusInsiders.com Freshman All-America Honorable Mention accolades. He was the first Orange true freshman to lead the club in rushing since Delone Carter in 2006.
Â
"They are pushing me to a certain point," Fredericks said. "You can never be too good. You can always raise the bar."
Â
Strickland played in all 12 games last season, rushing for 81 yards and one touchdown and catching nine passes for 137 yards and two scores. He joined Fredericks as the first Syracuse true freshmen to score rushing touchdowns in a season opener since Damien Rhodes did in the 2002 campaign starter against BYU.
Â
"You always have to have the mindset of never holding anything back, whether it is practice or games," Strickland said. "You have to go 100 percent any chance you get."
