SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team struck twice from long distance to keep the Orange undefeated in 2016. Senior Maddie Iozzi and freshman Taylor Bennett each found the back of the net from outside the penalty box to give Syracuse a 2-0 win over Albany (1-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse got on the board in the fourth minute of play when Iozzi drove towards the edge of the penalty area and struck her shot towards the far post in the upper ninety. It was Iozzi's second goal of her career and the first game-winner for the senior.
In the 18th minute, the Orange was awarded a free kick and the ball was placed 35 yards out. Bennett took the opportunity to take a shot at the goal and was right on target. The goal was Bennett's first collegiate goal in only her fourth game for Syracuse.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan has now recorded three consecutive clean sheets, tying her for first place in the ACC with three shutouts. It was also the tenth shutout of her career. With only one goal allowed in four games, Brosnan owns a 0.24 goals against average in 2016.
Brosnan had three saves in the match and was challenged in the second half on the Albany attack. Following a foul, the Great Danes were awarded a free kick inside the penalty area. Brosnan made a diving save to secure the shutout.
Syracuse improves to 3-0-1 on the season and are one of eight remaining undefeated teams in the ACC, with games still to be played on Sunday.
The Orange outshot Albany 11-7 in the match with four shots on goal. Junior Alex Lamontagne led the team with three shots on the day and senior Stephanie Skilton added two.
