Syracuse Falls 2-1 To Bucknell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After a defensive stalemate in the first half, Syracuse and Bucknell combined to score three goals in the second half. The Orange came up short, 2-1, for the first loss of the season falling to 3-0-1 and the Bison improve to 4-0-0.
In the first half, the Orange attack tested the Bucknell defense with four shots on goal, but the Bison keeper, Jessica Ratner, registered four saves in the half. Freshman Carolin Bader looked to have broken up the scoreless affair in the 17th minute when the ball deflected off the crossbar and was sent straight down landing just outside the goal line.
"I thought in the first half we looked more dangerous," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We knew there would be space on the field to play and I thought we played a little to direct at times."
In the 68th minute of the game, Bucknell scored the first goal of the game. Four minutes later they added insurance with a direct goal on a corner kick. Junior Eva Gordon answered with a goal of her own from long distance that struck the upper right corner of the net.
Gordon's goal was her second of the season after scoring the game-winner against Army West Point on Aug. 26. The junior has now matched her 2015 two-goal total just five games into the season.
"I thought we had a lot of possession of the ball, but I don't think we were sharp today. We'll move on and we'll prepare for a very good Cornell team on Sunday," Wheddon said.
The Orange will be back in action on Sunday at Cornell. The game is set to begin 1 p.m. and will be streamed online on the Ivy League Digital Network.
