Orange legend scores 43 points in 1956 home finale
Syracuse opens the 2016 season on Friday night against in-state foe Colgate. Cuse.com takes a look back at one of the most memorable meetings between the two programs, the 1956 regular-season finale.
Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In his final contest in the friendly confines of Archbold Stadium, running back Jim Brown set an NCAA single-game record with 43 points scored in a 61-7 romp over Colgate on Nov. 17, 1956. Brown scored six touchdowns and converted seven extra points on the day.
Â
Brown's record stood for more than 33 years. Illinois running back Howard Griffith eclipsed the mark with 48 points on eight touchdowns against Southern Illinois on Sept. 8, 1990.
Â
With New York governor William Averell Harriman in attendance, Brown led ninth-ranked Syracuse to its seventh win of the season. The future College and Pro Football Hall of Famer led the team's ground attack, racking up 197 yards on 22 carries. With his performance against the Raiders, Brown established a Syracuse single-season rushing record with 986 yards in 1956. Brown's season rushing standard stood until 1965 when Floyd Little ran for 1,065 yards.
Â
As a team, Syracuse rushed for 511 yards and nine touchdowns in the contest, establishing a new program single-game records that still stand. Colgate's only points came on an Alfred Jamison touchdown and subsequent extra point in the first quarter.
Â
The victory marked Syracuse's sixth straight win against against the Raiders.
