The freshman eight crew wins under the lights
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men's and women's rowing programs, in conjunction with the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA), hosted the fourth annual "Evening at Ten Eyck" on Saturday night at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse.
The night consisted of racing under the lights on the Onondaga Lake Outlet and the 2016 SARA Hall of Fame induction. The 2016 Hall of Fame class included Dr. Gordon Hoople '15, G '19, H '67; Dr. Bruce Baker '59; Charlie Roberts '61; Helen Tanger, Froukje Wegman; and the 1916 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) first varsity eight championship crew.
"This event has turned out to be one of the highlights of our year," head men's rowing coach Dave Reischman commented. "It's really about fellowship. It's really about celebrating the brotherhood and sisterhood of our sport."
Following the alumni row in the afternoon, the current Syracuse student-athletes competed against each other. With lights lining the way for a 500-meter race course, the freshman eight boat comprised of coxswain Alex Manfredi, Maddy Holzman-Klima, Kate Aemisgger, Silviu Tudor, Pieter Kerpestein, Sveta Radovic, Luka Vrbaski, Sarah Crummey, and Maddy Horridge won the "Evening at Ten Eyck" title, besting the senior eight crew.
"In rowing, we share the same boathouse, we share the same waterway," head women's rowing coach Justin Moore shared. "It's really special for them to get to do it. The freshmen, who won tonight, got the opportunity to start bonding their relationship, which will hopefully last way longer than four years."
The Orange women's rowing team will kick off its fall campaign with a scrimmage against Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 15, while the men's program will compete in its first event of autumn at the Head of the Charles on Saturday, Oct. 22.
