CLEMSON, S.C. – The top scoring offense in the Atlantic Coast Conference proved too much for the Syracuse women's soccer team Thursday night. The Orange dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 13 Clemson (8-2, 2-0) at Historic Riggs Field to drop to 7-2-2, 0-1-1 on the season.
"We knew how Clemson played, they are a very direct team," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "They are ultra competitive on set pieces and we were exposed on three set pieces in the second half."
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was tested early and often by the Clemson attack, recording a season-high seven saves in the match. The first half featured five saves by Brosnan and several clearances by the backline to keep the game scoreless going into the break. Syracuse has given up only one goal in the first half all season.
"I thought our first half performance was fine and we connected balls," Wheddon said. "We fought hard in the first half, but conceding an early goal in the second half sort of deflated us and Clemson capitalized."
The Tigers responded in the second half with four goals. Catrina Atanda, the ACC leading scorer, scored the first.
"What Clemson does a really great job of is they don't really let you settle down and get into a rhythm," Wheddon said. "We weren't able to establish much in the way of possession and rhythm of play."
Syracuse had seven shots in the game with three on goal from Eva Gordon, Alex Lamontagne and Steph Skilton.
The Orange head south to continue ACC play at Miami (6-4, 1-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Hurricanes picked up a big 2-1 win against No. 2 Virginia on Thursday night.
