Alumni Bests Varsity in Annual Orange Alumni Classic
9/24/2016 10:32:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team hosted its annual Orange Alumni Classic where the alumni defeated the varsity roster 8-4 in a scrimmage that lasted just three quarters before the current 'Cuse squad held an intra-squad scrimmage.
"It was good to get the guys on the field, in the Dome and against another group," said head coach John Desko. "I thought the alumni did a nice job today. It was a nice way to get to scrimmage against someone else and to also split the team up for the fourth quarter to get the whole group in. Everyone got in, a lot of parents were here and got to see their kids play and everyone goes home with a smile on their face today."
The start of the game went back and forth, after Ben Williams won the opening faceoff, a spot he dominated per usual, Matt Lane was stoned at the doorstep by 2016 graduate Warren Hill, who made 10 saves in net for the Orange. After the change of possession, Dylan Donahue finished a pass from Derek Maltz to make it 1-0.
The Donahue tally was the only goal Evan Molloy allowed in his one quarter of play, stopping four shots in the process. The varsity roster then went on a 3-0 run following the Alumni goal. Lane, Nate Solomon and James Trimboli each scored to make it 3-1 midway through the second.
The Alumni All-Stars quickly rallied though, with Josh Amidon and Tommy Palasek scoring to knot things up heading into the half.
Brad Voigt opened the second half scoring with a goal off a pass from Nick Weston, but Matt Abbott quickly equalized things once again in the middle of the third and final quarter, before the Alumni scored four unanswered over the final 6:16. Palasek, Randy Staats, Tim Barber and Donahue found the back of the net on goaltender William Klan to end the game with an 8-4 alumni advantage.
The game was the second contest of the day, after the 'Legends Game' featured alums in a range of the class of 1949-2004. That game ended in an 11-11 draw.
