Orange Open ACC Play with Setback at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore Tyler Lydon recorded his second consecutive double-double to lead Syracuse in a 96-81 loss at Boston College in the ACC opener for both teams on Sunday, Jan. 1 in Chestnut Hill.

Lydon recorded 17 points and grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds. Senior Tyler Roberson also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate student Andrew White III led the Orange with 22 points, while freshman Taurean Thompson scored 14 points in his first career start.

Boston College(8-6, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first five points of the game. The Orange fought back and tied the score at 10-10, but the Eagles' leading scorers Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman helped Boston College build a 10-point lead, 32-22, with 5:18 remaining in the half.

 A three-point play by Thompson cut the deficit to eight, 34-26, but the Eagles used a 10-3 scoring to run to take its largest lead of the half, 44-29, with 1:16 on the clock. Freshman Tyus Battle halted the run with his first field goal and John Gillon converted a layup with nine seconds on the clock to cut Boston College's advantage to 11, 44-33, at intermission.

A three-point play by Thompson at the 17:31 mark of the second half brought Syracuse (8-6, 0-1) within 10, 51-41, but that was close as the Orange would get. Boston College shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the field and 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from 3-point range in the second half as it led by as many as 22 on its way to its first ACC victory since March 2015.

Syracuse out-rebounded Boston College, 41-36, and held a 27-15 advantage in second-chance points. The Eagles were 16-for-26 (61.5 percent) from 3-point range. Robinson and Bowman led the outside shooting effort as they were a combined 10-for-12 from behind the arc and finished the game with 22 and 30 points, respectively.
