Roberson tallies third-season double-double
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Taurean Thompson led the Orange in scoring and had a career-high eight rebounds, but the Orange (10-7, 2-2 ACC) were topped by Virginia Tech (13-3, 2-2 ACC), 83-73, on Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
Leading the Orange offense for the first time in his career, Thompson added 18 points to his career rebounding night, converting 7-13 from the field and 4-7 from the charity stripe. Thompson also added a team-leading three blocks.
Senior Tyler Roberson marked his third double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds off the bench. Tyler Lydon added seven boards, while John Gillon had three.
The Hokies took an early 11-2 run to sit atop the Orange, 16-7. Unsatisfied, Syracuse came back to match the run with an equal stretch of their own to tie the game, 18-18, with 9:13 left on the clock.
Virginia Tech pushed forward with momentum and converted a 6-2 run to take the lead, 37-31, heading to the locker room. The Hokies would use the short run to remain on top for the remainder of the game.
White III tallied 13 points, three rebounds and two assists in the first half alone, while the graduate transfer finished the contest with 15 points to mark his 16th game this season in double figures. He also had six rebounds on the night.
Joining White III in double-digits was freshman Tyus Battle, who had 13 points.
The clubs traded equal 8-0 runs to open up the second half. The Virginia Tech eight-point scoring stretch put the Hokies up, 45-33, but the Orange brought the game back within four, 45-41, thanks to eight-straight points combined from White III, Thompson and Gillon.
Trailing by eight points, Syracuse established a 5-0 run from the pair of Roberson and Battle to come within three, 51-48.
The Orange fell behind once again, but regained momentum and established a late 10-2 run to bring the game back within six, 74-68. The Hokies continued the forward push to close out the conference matchup with the win, 83-73.
