The Syracuse track and field teams will get 2017 started on Friday, when the sprinters head to the Ramapo Opener in New York City.
The Orange men, which were ranked a program best No. 5 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Computer Rankings on Monday, is coming off a strong performance in the meet last season. Including performances by alums, members of the Orange took the top-six spots in the 60-meter hurdles at the event last year.
Freddie Crittenden III set what at the time was a new personal best of 7.71 seconds to lead the way, followed closely by alums Ramon Sosa and Donald Pollitt in second and third. David Gilstrap finished fourth, followed by Richard Floyd and Chevis Armstead respectively.
It wasn't just the men that turned in wins, with Tia Thevenin leading the women's squad with a victory of her own in the 60-meter hurdles (8.48). Danielle Delgado finished second right behind Thevenin. Kadejhia Sellers won her first collegiate race at the meet last season, taking first in the 400-meters, with 2016 alum Rebecca Robinson and Brittany Belo finishing second and third for a podium sweep for 'Cuse.
Additional wins came from Regine Hunter, who won the triple jump, 2016 graduate Jabari Butler who claimed a victory in the high jump and Kashif Miller and Victoria Parker, who win the men's and women's 200 meters respectively.
The Ramapo Opener will be the second meet of 2016-17 for the Orange, which began action in December at the Greg Page Relays. Ebhani Blackwood won the triple jump at that meet in her collegiate debut, while distance runners Simon Smith and Rachel Bonner each won the 3000-meters.
The Ramapo Opener gets underway on Friday at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
