Erin Gillingham's first half goal was the difference for No. 7 Syracuse (9-3, 1-3 ACC) to down No. 16 Princeton 1-0 on Sunday at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The win was the ninth shutout for the Orange on the year, making them now two shy of the program's all-time record, while Borg van der Velde picked up her eighth shutout in cage, which moves her to fourth on the program's single-season record list.
Gillingham and the Orange got on the board 12 minutes into action. After 'Cuse earned a corner, Roos Weers rifled a hard shot towards the right post, where Gillingham was waiting to deflect the ball into the top of the net.
The final 58:01 rendered both teams scoreless, in a contest that featured back and forth play and tough defense. Syracuse out-shot Princeton 8-5 in the contest, with van der Velde making two saves, compared to four from Princeton netminder Grace Baylis. Â 'Cuse also drew four corners in the win.
Next, the Orange have a road trip to Durham, N.C. to square off with No. 2 Duke in their second-to-last ACC battle of the regular season. That game is scheduled for Saturday at Noon.
