Orange Cruise Past Drexel
10/15/2017 6:22:00 PM | Field Hockey
The No. 7 Syracuse field hockey team (11-4) dominated Drexel (5-10) to cruise to a 4-0 win on Sunday, with 'Cuse scoring early and often in the victory.
Syracuse potted three goals in the first 31 minutes to effectively put the game away before halftime and 'Cuse out-shot the Dragons 22-1 in the contest, also earning nine penalty corners without surrendering one.
Lies Lagerweij opened the Orange scoring, in what would be a four-point afternoon for her on the day. She buried a rebound, which was setup by Emma Tufts in the 10th minute to get Syracuse going.
Roos Weers then scored less than seven minutes later off a corner play. Laura Hurff was the inserter, while Claire Webb was the stick stop in what was a clean corner play for the goal. Webb's assist was the first career point for the sophomore, who has started all but one game since arriving on campus, and was just the beginning of her career afternoon.
Caroline Cady was the next goal scorer for the Orange in the 31st minute. The play was setup by Lagerweij driving baseline, drawing the goalkeeper and sending a pass in front for Cady to capitalize on the empty net.
In the second half, Webb continued her big day with her first career goal. After the initial corner attempt by Lagerweij was sent back away from the cage, Webb knocked the bouncing ball into the back of the cage for the fourth Syracuse goal on the day.
Borg van der Velde notched Syracuse's 10th shutout on the season, one shy of the program's single season record. Next, Syracuse will close out its regular season road slate at Penn on Sunday at 1 p.m.
