Orange Drop Regular Season Road Finale
10/22/2017 4:13:00 PM | Field Hockey
Two late goals from Penn (8-6) led the Quakers past No. 10 Syracuse (11-5) in the Orange's penultimate regular season contest on Sunday in Philadelphia, 3-2.
The Quakers got on the board just over three minutes into play and nearly added another 15 minutes later, but Borg van der Velde came up big with a penalty stroke save to keep the deficit at one.
'Cuse got on the board in the 24th minute after drawing a corner. Roos Weers buried the qualizer, with assists coming from Laura Hurff and Claire Webb on the corner play to knot the game.
The score remained that way into the hale, with 'Cuse again breaking through in the first five minutes out of the locker room. Carolin Hoffmann buried a rebound to put Syracuse up 2-1.
However, a pair of Penn goals in the final-30 minutes, including an eventual game winner by Alexa Hoover – who had her hand in all-three Quaker goals, including assisting on both Gina Guccione goals - buried one of her own for the eventual game winner with six minutes remaining.
Syracuse was out-shot 10-9, with both teams putting eight shots on cage on Sunday. 'Cuse also drew six corners to Penn's four.
Next, Syracuse will close its regular season on Saturday by hosting Pacific on Senior Day. Action is scheduled to get underway at Noon.
Then, 'Cuse will travel to Louisville for the ACC Tournament opener against the Cardinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
