WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Syracuse placekicker Cole Murphy was named a Lou Groza Award "Star of the Week" on Monday, Oct. 23 for his performance in the Orange's 27-19 loss to No. 8 Miami Saturday.
Â
The Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Award, which is presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes three of the top FBS kickers each week. In addition to Murphy, Parker Shaunfield of Southern Miss and Jake Verity of East Carolina earned the honor for Week 8 of the 2017 college football season. Â
Â
Murphy was responsible for 13 of the Orange's 19 points against the Hurricanes. He matched his career high by hitting four field goals, including three from 40 yards and beyond. He also tacked on the extra point following Syracuse's only touchdown.
Â
Murphy converted field goals of 22, 40, 45 and 53 yards on a slippery surface at Hard Rock Stadium. His 53-yarder with 5:23 to play was a career-long and cut the Syracuse deficit to 20-19.
Â
With the performance, Murphy vaulted into second place on the Syracuse career record list with 55 made field goals. He is two shy of the program record (57) held by John Biskup.
Â
Murphy has connected on 16 of his 18 field-goal attempts this season. His 16 makes are tied with Toledo's Jameson Vest for the second-most in the nation.
