Coughlin Named 2017 ACC Football Legend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach and three-time Orange letterwinner Tom Coughlin been selected as Syracuse University's representative in the 2017 ACC Football Legends Class, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Coughlin will join 13 other all-time greats as honorees during the ACC Night of Legends at the Charlotte Convention Center on Friday, Dec. 1. The class will also be recognized during on-field pregame festivities at the 13th annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game set for Saturday, Dec. 2 at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.

A halfback for legendary Syracuse head coach Ben Schwartzwalder from 1965-67, Coughlin shared the Orange backfield with College and Pro Football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. During his senior season, Coughlin led SU in both receptions and receiving yardage as the Orange compiled an 8-2 record and finished 12th in the final United Press International (UPI) poll.

Coughlin joined the coaching ranks the following season. He made several collegiate and professional stops as an assistant coach, including seven seasons (1974-80) at Syracuse, before becoming the head coach at Boston College in 1991.

After three years with the Eagles, Coughlin spent 20 years as an NFL head coach, including 12 seasons with the New York Giants from 2004-15. He won 102 regular-season games with the Giants and eight more in the playoffs, including victories over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI. Coughlin also served as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002.

A 2017 recipient of Syracuse University's Arents Award for excellence in his profession, Coughlin is currently Jacksonville's executive vice president for football operations.

Coughlin is the fourth Syracuse ACC Football Legend, joining College and Pro Football Hall of Famers Floyd Little (2013), Art Monk (2014) and 1992 consensus All-American Chris Gedney (2015).
