SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Christina Oyawale tied for a team-high 11 kills as the Syracuse women's volleyball team defeated Clemson, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-21), Friday night at the Women's Building in an ACC matchup. Oyawale's .917 hitting percentage set a program single-match record (minimum of 10 attempts).
The Orange moves to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the ACC with the victory. Clemson drops to 5-12 and 0-5.
Anastasiya Gorelina contributed 11 kills with 11 digs, Jalissa Trotter produced a match-high 24 assists and Belle Sand tied for a match-leading 13 digs.
How It Was Decided
After trailing 11-8 in the first set, 'Cuse went on a 17-6 scoring run to win 25-17. Trotter, Gorelina and Oyawale closed out the set with three straight kills.
Syracuse used another late scoring run in the second set to capitalize. The Orange concluded the game on an 8-3 run to come away with a 25-16 victory.
With the third set tied up at 14, Syracuse ran off four straight points on a Gorelina kill and three Tiger errors. 'Cuse controlled the remainder of the set and a Trotter kill capped off the 25-21 triumph.
Coach's Thoughts
"We feel good, it always feels good to win, but we also know what we have to do to be better," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We have to give Clemson credit. They didn't quit regardless of the score and they continued to fight in all three games."
Of Note
Oyawale recorded kills on 11 of her 12 attempts on the night. Her .917 hitting percentage passes Dena LaBarbera's mark of .900 from a match against Niagara on Sep. 24, 1994.
What's Next?
The Orange is back home on Sunday, Oct. 8 in an ACC matchup versus Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Fans that cannot attend will be able to stream the match live on ACC Network Extra.
