Orange Battle But Fall Short in OT

'Cuse played 21 minutes with a player down but managed to force OT
The No. 13 Syracuse field hockey team (12-7) battled into overtime with No. 3 Michigan (20-2) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 1-0 in the extra frame.
'Cuse spent the final 21:17 down a player due to a red card handed to the Orange in the 51st minute. The Orange handled the adversity, turning away all six shots Michigan sent on in the second half, with Borg van der Velde making four stops in cage.
However, Michigan finally broke through during the 6-on-7 overtime period, getting a late touch on a big ball sent into the circle and sending it into the back of the cage. Meg Dowthwaite scored the winner on an assist from Esther de Leijer.
"These kids played their hearts out today," said head coach Ange Bradley. "They wanted to win, they came here to win, and when you have five versus six it's tough to cover everything. We had an unfortunate situation, we played 18 minutes with a player down and we played even with them defensively and they did not let down at all."
Syracuse had controlled the tempo during the 11-on-11 action, with the Orange out-shooting the Wolverines 4-2 in the first half, putting two shots on cage to Michigan's zero and playing an even 1-1 in penalty corners in the first half.
Michigan ended up out-shooting 'Cuse 9-5 for the game as a whole, with five of those nine making their way to van der Velde. Michigan also earned four corners to Syracuse's two.
The loss ends the season for the Orange, and the careers of six seniors who made an immeasurable impact on the program. Carey, Lies Lagerweij, Laura Hurff, Caroline Cady, Erin Gillingham and Annalena Ulbrich helped the Orange to four NCAA Tournament appearances, two NCAA Championship game appearances and earned the program's first national title by any women's program at Syracuse University in 2015.
