HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Ahead 7-3 after the first quarter, Louisville got touchdown runs of 43 yards by Jackson and 33 yards by Reggie Bonnafon to go up 21-3 early in the second quarter before the game was halted due to lightning in the area.Â
After a 43-minute delay, play resumed and Jackson picked up where he left off. The junior signal-caller connected with Jaylen Smith for a 72-yard touchdown, and Bonnafon for a 34-yard score, to give the Cardinals a commanding 35-3 lead at the half. Â
BABERS' TAKE
"Well, obviously that's a fantastic football team," Orange head coach Dino Babers said. "What they did to us, they put a whooping on us really bad. Hats off to Coach (Bobby) Petrino, Lamar (Jackson), that defense, what they were able to do to us, it was an outstanding effort by them and we need to do a lot better than what we did and we will."
OF NOTE
Philips became just the eighth player in Syracuse history with 2,000 career receiving yards. He caught two passes for 13 yards Saturday and now has 215 receptions for 2,004 yards in his Orange tenure.
Zaire Franklin eclipsed the 300-tackle mark for his career by making four stops, including half a sack, against the Cardinals. The Orange captain now has 303 tackles. Franklin is the first 'Cuse player to achieve that milestone since Kelvin Smith tallied 325 tackles from 2003-06.
Cole Murphy continued his strong senior season, connecting on a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter. It was Murphy's fifth field goal of 50 yards or more. Dave Jacobs (1975-78) holds the Syracuse career record for with seven field goals of 50+ yards.
Â
Senior wideout Steve Ishmael had two catches for 29 yards against Louisville to bring his 2017 reception total to 94, tying the program single-season catch record set last season by Amba Etta-Tawo.
Orange quarterback Eric Dungey missed his second game in a row due to injury. Senior Zack Mahoney started in his place and was 5- for-15 passing for 49 yards and two interceptions. Mahoney was relieved by redshirt freshman Rex Culpepper late in the first half. Culpepper played the remainder of the game and went 8-of-19 through the air for 89 yards and two interceptions in the first extended action of his career. He was also Syracuse's second-leading rusher with 47 yards.
