Thorpe's Strong First Half Helps Orange to Victory
11/19/2017 9:48:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Graduate student Geno Thorpe was one of five players to reach double figures in scoring in Syracuse's win against Texas Southern. He scored all of his season-high 13 points in the first half to help the Orange pull away from the Tigers and post their third straight win to start the 2017-18 campaign.
Â
Neither team could take control of the game in the first 15 minutes of the contest as Robert Lewis' basket at the 4:32 mark evened the score at 24-24, marking the seventh tie of the game. Thorpe hit two 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to spark Syracuse on a 14-6 scoring run to end the half as the Orange led, 38-30, at halftime.
Â
Thorpe accounted for eight during the scoring outburst. Overall, he was 5-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Â
"When we weren't moving in the first half, Geno made some really good plays, almost on his own," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "The first half he kept us in there. That was good."
Â
"I just tried to come in and bring energy on the defensive end," Thorpe said of his performance. "Credit to my teammates. They found me on the open shots and I just wanted to capitalize on those and knock them down."
Â
Thorpe, a transfer from USF, was slowed in the preseason with a foot injury. Now, he is showing his coaches, teammates and Orange fans the kind of player he can be – one that averaged 15.1 points and 4.6 assists per game last season for the Bulls.
Â
"He was hurt and missed all of that time and I don't think he has the same push that he had earlier in the year off his foot," Boeheim said. "He was very good in the first half tonight."
Â
Thorpe and his teammates are back in action in the Carrier Dome on Monday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. against Oakland. Tickets for all of Syracuse's home games can be purchased at the Syracuse Box Office, on Cuse.com, or by calling 888-DOMETIX.Â
