Thirty years ago, the Syracuse football team made history, finishing the regular season with an 11-0 record and earning an invitation to the Sugar Bowl where it tied Auburn. This fall, Cuse.com will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that historic team each week with a recap of each contest from the 1987 campaign.
In its ninth game of the regular season, Syracuse visited Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to face the Midshipmen. The date was Nov. 7 and the Orange were ranked No. 8 in the nation heading into the game.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Syracuse offense continued to roll, racking up for 455 total yards and scoring on six of 10 possessions in a 34-10 triumph at Navy. Quarterback Don McPherson threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns to break his own season passing yardage record.
For the second consecutive game, and the third time in 1987, the Syracuse rushed for more yards (246 yards) than it passed for (209 yards). Fullback Daryl Johnston shouldered the load on the ground, running for 66 yards and scoring the first two rushing touchdowns of his career.
"Daryl Johnston, who was given the game ball, played a tremendous game," said Syracuse head coach Dick MacPherson afterward. "He's an unselfish player, but today he got himself two touchdowns."
Deval Glover had his best day of the regular season, hauling in three passes for 69 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown reception to open scoring for Syracuse.
"On defense, we had a real problem with their speed," said Navy head coach Elliot Uzelac. "We couldn't get enough coverage from our linebackers, so we brought up our secondary. Then we got beat deep on the pass."
