Howard's Career Night Helps Orange Past Toledo

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Frank Howard scored a career-high 25 points to lead Syracuse (5-0) to a 72-64 victory against Toledo (3-1) in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Freshman Oshae Brissett joined Howard in double figures. He posted his second career double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, both of which were career highs.
How It Was Decided
Syracuse led the entire first half but couldn't put the Rockets away. A layup by Geno Thorpe gave the Orange their largest lead of the half, 23-15, with 6:22 remaining. Five straight points by Toledo cut the deficit to three, but Brissett hit a 3-pointer and a layup to put Syracuse back up by eight, 28-20, with 2:36 on the clock.
Toledo fought back and outscored the Orange, 12-5, during the final 2:04 to cut the deficit to one at intermission. Jaelan Sanford started the offensive outburst with a 3-pointer and capped the run with another three with six seconds on the clock for the 33-32 halftime score.
The Rockets scored the first points of the second half on Nate Navigato's 3-pointer to take their first lead of the game at 35-33. Then the Orange offense went to work. Redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer converted a three-point play to give the advantage back to Syracuse and spark the Orange on an 11-0 scoring run. Howard had six of the 11 points, and his basket at the 14:59 mark gave Syracuse a 44-35 lead.
Toledo cut the deficit to the three, 44-41, at the 12:25 mark, but the Orange responded with eight straight points to push their advantage back to 11, 52-41.
The Rockets made one final push in the final minute, but Moyer's dunk with 12 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
Of Note
Moyer reached double figures in scoring for the first time in his career. He was 4-for-6 from the field on his way to 11 points. Moyer also pulled down seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
Syracuse held a commanding 50-31 advantage in rebounds. Syracuse outscored Toledo on second-chance points, 22-7. The Orange also had a 26-10 margin on points in the paint.
