Syracuse Outlasts Maryland in ACC/Big 10 Challenge, 72-70

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining to pull Syracuse (6-0) in front and the Orange held on for a 72-70 victory over Maryland (6-2) Monday night at the Carrier Dome in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
Four different Syracuse players produced double-digit scoring in the victory. Battle led the way with 18 points and freshman Oshae Brissett finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Frank Howard totaled 15 points with 10 assists and a career-high seven steals.
How It Was Decided
The first 8:01 of regulation consisted of six ties and four lead changes. Howard and Battle hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Syracuse an early 22-18 advantage. Maryland answered with a 7-2 run to regain the lead.
The Orange answered with an 8-0 run to take a 32-25 lead. Battle hit a jumper followed by a Bourama Sidibe layup, two free throws from Marek Dolezaj and a layup from Brissett. The Terrapins followed with eight unanswered points to regain the lead.

Battle found Dolezaj for a late layup as the shot clock expired and Syracuse took a 36-35 lead into halftime. The Orange outrebounded Maryland 21-15 in the first half and 12-6 on the offensive glass.
The Terrapins went on a 9-4 run to start the second half and held a 52-50 lead with 12:19 to play. Brissett converted a three-point play, Dolezaj hit a jumper and Brissett added a free throw to put Syracuse ahead 56-52. Maryland followed with seven unanswered points to regain the lead.
Brissett converted another three-point play to give Syracuse a 63-61 advantage with 4:33 remaining in regulation. Kevin Huerter hit a three-pointer with 1:42 remaining to pull the Terrapins back in front, 66-65. Battle answered right back with a trey to give the Orange a 68-66 advantage.
Battle hit two free throws and Huerter knocked down his seventh three-point field goal of the game to pull the Terrapins within one with seven seconds remaining. On the following inbounds play, Howard threw a full-court pass to Battle who sealed the victory with a dunk.

Syracuse and Maryland combined for 20 lead changes and 15 ties, with neither side building a lead larger than seven points.
The Orange dominated the paint, outscoring Maryland 42-20 in the post. The 42 points in the paint accounted for 58.3 percent of the Syracuse scoring on the night.
Huerter finished with a game-high 23 points for the Terrapins. He made 8-of-11 field goal attempts and 7-of-9 three-pointers. The Clifton Park, N.Y. native added four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal on the night.
