Thirty years ago, the Syracuse football team made history, finishing the regular season with an 11-0 record and earning an invitation to the Sugar Bowl where it tied Auburn. This fall, Cuse.com will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that historic team each week with a recap of each contest from the 1987 campaign.
In its 10th game of the regular season, Syracuse hosted Boston College at home in the Carrier Dome. The date was Nov. 14 and the Orange were ranked No. 6 in the nation heading into the game.Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y – The Orange showed their resilience in a 45-17 come-from-behind win over Boston College at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse fell behind 17-0 before erupting for 45 unanswered to improve to 10-0. Syracuse scored points to on seven consecutive possessions. Quarterback Don McPherson completed 10-of-19 passes for 211 yards and threw for two touchdowns.
For the fourth consecutive game, Syracuse rushed for 200+ yards (208), led by McPherson who amassed 54 yards on nine carries. The offense tallied its sixth straight game with more than 200 passing yards, as well. It was the eighth season in a row the home team emerged victorious and the 21st time in the 28-game history of the series.
"Spotting them 17 points and then coming from behind with 45 unanswered points is a great tribute to Syracuse University football," said head coach Dick MacPherson afterward. "They're disciplined, unselfish, and get things done."
'Cuse received two rushing touchdowns from Robert Drummond and one each from Daryl Johnston and Michael Owens. The 45 points scored by the Orange were the most scored by Syracuse against Boston College up to that point.Â
"We didn't get to the quarterback and then they went deep," said Boston College head coach Jack Bicknell. "That is when they got the crowd back into it. We got behind. I didn't think they could ever stop us, but they did. I'm very impressed with Donnie McPherson. He's the best I've seen. Donnie McPherson is the best we've faced."
