Philips Named Walter Camp Connecticut Player of the Year

'Cuse star voted top college football player from the state of Connecticut
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Syracuse wide receiver Ervin Philips was named the 2017 Walter Camp Connecticut Player of the Year on Monday, Dec. 11. Voted on by members of the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the award is presented to the top college football player who is a resident and/or played scholastically in the state of Connecticut.

Philips is the fifth player in program history to earn the award, joining linebacker Terry Wooden (1989), defensive back Rob Thomson (1990), running back Kyle McIntosh (1997) and defensive end Dwight Freeney (2001).

An All-ACC Second Team selection, Philips made 89 receptions for 904 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in 2017. He also rushed 11 times for 76 yards and a score. Currently, Philips ranks sixth among FBS receivers in receptions and receptions per game (7.4). He also ranks fifth in the ACC with 75.3 receiving yards per contest.

Syracuse's all-time leading receiver, Philips is the only player in program history with 2,000 receiving yards and 500 rushing yards. In 45 games for the Orange, he caught 223 passes for 2,069 yards and ran 103 times for 522 yards. He scored 20 career touchdowns (15 receiving, 5 rushing).

A native of West Haven, Conn., Philips played scholastically for head coach Ed McCarthy at West Haven High School. He led the Blue Devils to the Southern Connecticut Conference Division I East title and a berth to the Class LL state semifinals as a senior in 2013. A consensus all-state honoree, Philips was named the 2013 SCC Division I Player of the Year and also earned Walter Camp All-Connecticut honors. He finished his career as West Haven's all-time leader in rushing yards (4,596), touchdowns scored (88) and yards from scrimmage (6,182).

Philips, along with the members of the 2017 Walter Camp All-America Team, Player of the Year Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Coach of the Year Mark Richt (Miami), and other major award winners, will be honored at the organization's national awards banquet Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at Yale University's Lanman Center.
