Battle's Late Game Heroics Lead 'Cuse Past Georgetown in OT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Tyus Battle scored a career-high 29 points, with eight coming in overtime, to lead Syracuse (9-1) to an 86-79 comeback victory over Georgetown (8-1) Saturday afternoon. The Orange erased a 13-point second-half deficit to force the extra period.
Freshman Oshae Brissett added a career-high 25 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. 24 of Brissett's points came in the second half and overtime. Junior Frank Howard recorded 19 points with nine assists.
The win marks the 50th all-time victory for Syracuse over the Hoyas.
How it was Decided
Two 3-pointers from Battle and an alley-oop from Howard to Paschal Chukwu helped Syracuse accumulate a 77-73 overtime advantage with 2:33 remaining. The Orange held the Hoyas to six points down the stretch and shot 9-of-12 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Game Summary
Cold shooting was the theme for both sides for most of the first half. Battle hit a jumper to give Syracuse a 9-7 lead with 11:47 to go. A 10-3 run opened up a five-point lead for Georgetown. A Battle 3-pointer and a Moyer dunk, sandwiched around a jumper by the Hoyas, pulled Syracuse back within two.
Battle drained another 3-pointer to reestablish a 22-21 Orange lead, but Georgetown answered with a 7-2 run and entered halftime with a 28-24 advantage.
The Hoyas opened up an early 12-point lead in the second half. Brissett connected on a 3-pointer and added two free throws to cut the deficit to seven with 12:25 remaining. Georgetown responded with seven straight points and took a 53-40 advantage with 10:58 to go.
Three-straight buckets by Howard and a Brissett free throw pulled Syracuse back within seven, but a Georgetown three-point play gave the Hoyas a 60-50 lead with 6:54 to play.
Battle connected on a 3-pointer which pulled the Orange within five with 4:00 remaining. Georgetown maintained a 69-64 lead with 1:32 remaining and Battle drained a corner trey to pull Syracuse within two. Howard stole the ball and finished a layup on the following possession to even the game at 69. Neither team was able to muster a basket over the final 1:00 of play, which resulted in overtime.
Numbers Of Note
Syracuse finished the game shooting 40.6 percent (28-of-69) from the field and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point range. Georgetown finished at 45.6 percent (26-of-57) and 11.8 percent (2-of-17) in those respective categories. The Orange outrebounded the Hoyas 44-37 and 19-9 on the offensive glass.
Syracuse has now won four games in a row against Georgetown that have gone to overtime. The last time the two clubs went the extra distance was in the 2013 Big East Tournament semifinals, a 58-55 Orange victory. Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim sits at 10-3 all-time against the Hoyas in overtime matchups.
Jessie Govan led Georgetown with 21 points and eight rebounds. Jagan Mosely chipped in 20 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench.
After giving up 14 3-pointers to Colgate one week ago, the Orange vastly improved their perimeter defense. Georgetown's two 3-point field goals and 11.8 percent from behind the arc are both season-lows for Syracuse opponents. On the reverse side, the Orange's 10 3-pointers on 43.5 percent shooting are both season-highs.
