'Cuse Knocks Off UConn in Jimmy V Classic

New York, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle, redshirt-freshman Matthew Moyer and freshman Oshae Brissett combined for 56 points to lead Syracuse (7-1) to a 72-63 victory over Connecticut (6-3) Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic.
Battle led the way with 22 points, Moyer added 18 points with eight rebounds and Brissett totaled 16 points and 10 boards.
How It Was Decided
With the Orange clinging to a 65-57 advantage, a put-back dunk by Moyer reestablished a double-digit lead with 2:47 to play. Another Moyer dunk with 1:08 remaining sealed the Syracuse victory.
Game Summary
Moyer and Brissett combined for nine points and Syracuse took an early 11-3 lead. A Connecticut layup with 12:40 remaining in the first half brought the Huskies back within three.
The Orange answered with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 30-15 advantage. Moyer dunked, followed by two free throws from Bourama Sidibe and a Brissett dunk. Battle and Frank Howard hit back-to-back layups, Moyer added a tip-in and a jumper from Battle capped off the surge.
Syracuse shot 48.0 percent (12-of-25) in the first half and took a 40-27 lead into halftime.
UConn trimmed the deficit to eight with an early second half run. Later in the half, Battle hit two 3-pointers and a jumper over the course of an 8-2 run and the Orange opened up a 55-38 advantage with 13:20 to play.
The Huskies cut the deficit down to eight points once again with 6:49 left in regulation. A Moyer free throw and a Brissett dunk helped Syracuse regain a double-figure lead.
Of Note
Entering Tuesday night's matchup, Moyer averaged just 2.4 points per game. In fact, his 18 points on the evening surpassed the 17 that he amassed over the course of the first seven games this season. He shot 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from the field and hit the first 3-point field goal of his career.
The Orange were dominant on the glass once against, outrebounding the Huskies 37-26 on the evening and 14-7 on the offensive glass. Syracuse also converted a season-high 24 free throws.
Jalen Adams led Connecticut with 22 points on the night. He connected on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) shots from the field and 3-of-6 (50.0 percent) 3-pointers.
